India is my favorite destination and if I had one plane ticket left in my life it would always be back there, despite there being so many incredible places I am yet to visit. It can be intimidating to try and pick from the multiple amazing places and experiences it has to offer though so here is my suggestion for the perfect two week itinerary (tried and tested with my sister in 2006) which really combines five types of holiday in one! We traveled by train and bus and spent a maximum of three nights in each place.
The City Break: Mumbai for the architecture, shopping, amazing street food and incredible atmosphere. We loved the Bhel Puri on Chowpatty beach and watching the sunset from The Gateway of India.
The ‘Real India’: Nasik for bathing ghats, temples and hardly any other tourists.
The jaw-dropping heritage sight: Ellora and Ajanta cave temples are absolutely stunning. We based ourselves in Aurangabad to visit both and took the overnight train back to Mumbai. You have to experience an Indian train journey!
The Hill Station: Matheran for Horse riding, walking, sunset viewing and (slightly) cooler temperatures! We loved afternoon tea at Verandah in the Forrest Hotel
The beach holiday: Goa. You can enjoy a wonder around the strangely European-feeling captial, Panjim, with it's wonderful old churches then spend a few days swimming, sunbathing, drinking cocktails on the beach and if you are anything like us, doing a lot of jewelry shopping!
